Happiness with Creativity - Blog No. 1

I am a busy mum of two energetic, creative boys. I am trying to balance the responsibilities of my business, Blue Green Girl Creations and management of our household. If you want to find out more about my artist life, click here.  I often push back my personal creative time for what I am “obligated” to do. Frequently this is an expectation that I have created in my mind, not from exterior influence. Time and time again we are our worst enemies. Here are three quick and simple changes that you can incorporate into your busy routine to get yourself on the journey to a more creative life.

 1. Give up on Perfection

There will always be housework to be done. There will always be washing in the laundry. If you wait for the house to be “perfect”, then you will never have time for creativity or yourself. Be kind to yourself and live with a minimally clean and tidy house sometimes.

2. Start off with just 15 minutes

If you have trouble finding time for your creativity, then blocking off 15 minutes every day can do the trick. Keep a simple art journal or blank note pad with a pencil case in easy reach (maybe the kitchen). This way you can grab your supplies in a matter of seconds and settle at the dining table in no time. If you do things quick enough, your brain doesn’t have time to argue.   Sometimes you get so absorbed and that 15 minutes can turn into an hour. Inspiration for my indoor plant series originated from a 15 minute sketch. You can check them out here.

3. Walk regularly

When I walk the neighbourhood with my dog, I take in my surroundings. Doing an exercise that is easy, lets your muscles work involuntary and gives an opportunity for your brain to wonder.  I notice the flora, fauna, smells, colours, sounds (near and far) and my mind runs free. I am free to imagine my next drawing or painting.
